Tree and Beetle Identification
The University of Wisconsin – Madison has a great deal of information on their Web site to assist in identifying ash trees and potential signs of infestation.
EAB Hotline – Ask Questions or Report Potential Beetle Sitings
DATCP has set up a hotline to request more information or to report possible sitings of EAB: 1-800-462-2803.
Before calling the EAB hotline, please do the following:
1) Make sure your tree has two or more of these symptoms
- D-shaped holes
- S-shaped scrolling under the tree bark
- Water sprouts (small leafy branches emerging from the base of the tree)
- Dieback in the canopy (leaves are yellowed and/or falling from the tree during the summer)
- Woodpecker activity
- Bullet-shaped, iridescent green beetles from May through August
2) Make sure the tree in question in an ash. If you're not sure, visit one of these tree identification web sites:
Department of Natural Resources
University of Wisconsin - Green Bay
3) Be sure the green bug you saw is NOT an EAB look-alike. If you're not sure, check this look-alikes page at the University of Wisconsin – Madison.
The hotline number is 1-800-462-2803 or send an email.
If you can take a digital picture of any insects or exit holes, the images would be helpful in identifying the insect. Email to the department.
If you capture any insects, place them in a sturdy container such as a pill bottle or small box and mail the insect to: Krista Hamilton, DATCP, 2811 Agriculture Dr., Madison WI 53718-6777.
If you have any questions or if you would like an information packet, please call the hotline or send an email with your name and address and we’ll send a packet in the mail.
For more information, contact 608-224-5005 or send an email.
