MADISON -- Sunset Orchards/Richland Hills, a Richland Center company, is voluntarily recalling sliced apples produced at its plant because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria.

No illnesses have been reported. The bacteria were detected during routine testing.

The apple slices were distributed to institutions including schools, nursing homes, hospitals and restaurants. There was also some limited distribution to retail stores.

The company is recalling the following brand apple products with "use by" dates of Jan. 26-30:

  • Richland Hills Sliced Apples in 2-ounce, 2.4-ounce, 3-ounce, 2-pound and 10-pound packages
  • Richland Hills Honeycrisp Sliced Apples in 4-ounce packages
  • Richland Hills Organic Sliced Apples in 4-ounce and 6-ounce packages
  • Crunch Pak Organic Sliced Apples in 6-ounce packages
  • Richland Hills Apple Nibblers in 2-ounce packages
  • Richland Hills Diced Apples in 2-pound and 10-pound packages
  • Richland Hills Quartered Apples in 10-pound packages
  • Richland Hills Half Apples in 10-pound packages
  • Also Pearson Foods fruit trays with sell-by dates of Jan. 19 and earlier and containing 6.5-ounce, 12-ounce, 24-ounce, 36-ounce and 48-ounce packages of apples

Institutions that have these products should contact their distributors for instructions. Consumers who bought them in retail stores should discard them or return them to the store where they bought them. For more information, call the company toll-free at 1-800-811-8088.

Listeria monocytogenes may cause serious or even fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, or others with weakened immune systems. It can also cause miscarriage and stillbirth in pregnant women. In otherwise healthy adults, it may cause short-term symptoms including high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.
